In British Columbia’s arid Okanagan valley, vineyards north to south bask in the sunshine, where the air is sweet with the promise of wine. Despite facing unprecedented challenges, the BC wine industry stands tall, buoyed by hope and togetherness.
Challenges faced by the BC Wine Industry
The recent years have been particularly trying for the BC wine industry. Record wildfire seasons and devastating cold snaps have cast a shadow over vineyards. For many wineries, this has resulted in destroyed grape harvests and, in some cases, the death of vines that had been nurtured with care for generations.
For many wineries this presents a daunting prospect for the future. But these hard blows are sparking positive conversation within the industry.
David McBean, Watermark’s General Manager and BC wine scene enthusiast, reflects on the challenges faced by the industry. ,” It’s no secret that this past winter has caused a great deal of strain on the BC wine industry. In these situations, it’s important for us to consider our close partnerships within the wine industry. It has always been important for us to support our local growers and winemakers as they are a big part of what makes this area so special. These connections allow us access to wines that we are incredibly proud to showcase for our guests at times when supply can become more challenging”.
In response to crop losses, vineyards across BC’s nine wine regions are already replanting, nurturing hope for future harvests. Some are diversifying grape varietals, embracing the range of the landscape and climate. Despite the looming threats of unpredictable weather, the industry remains optimistic, looking towards new, sustainable horizons while upholding standards of quality and production.
Okanagan’s Got It!
Amidst the hardship lies a beacon of hope, fueled by the unwavering spirit of community that defines the BC wine scene. Wineries across the Okanagan are driving initiatives like the #OkanagansGotIt campaign.
Winemakers and wineries across the Okanagan are inviting guests to visit the region and their tasting rooms. They have wine and they want you to buy it! Videos are making the rounds on social media where you can see the warehouses filled with barrels and cases of wine. “We’ve got what you need”, “We’ve got wine”, “We’re open, come visit us” echo through these videos as they tag and challenge more wineries to join the initiative.
Supporting BC’s Wine Community
Now, more than ever, the BC wine community needs support from its loyal supporters and newcomers alike. Every visit to a local winery and every bottle purchased becomes a gesture of solidarity. By partaking in tasting experiences and exploring the richness of BC’s wine country, you can play a crucial role in sustaining the vibrancy and diversity of the region’s winemaking tradition.
