We’re proud to share that Watermark Beach Resort has officially achieved Biosphere Sustainable Certification through the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA). This globally recognized designation aligns with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals and reflects a deep commitment not only to the environment but also to our community, culture and local economy.
Certification wasn’t simple. It required meeting strict criteria across 17 sustainability pillars, providing proof of real action not just good intentions. That’s what makes this achievement special. It confirms that the work we’ve been doing all along is meaningful, measurable and globally recognized.
"Sometimes we don't even realize how much our team does every day, until we see it all laid out. This certification affirms that our values are more than words. They're part of how we operate."
David McBean, General Manager
What Is Biosphere Sustainable Certification?
This international certification program, led by the Responsible Tourism Institute, helps tourism businesses like ours put sustainability into practice in clear, achievable ways. The Thompson Okanagan region was the first Biosphere Certified Destination in all of North and South America. Watermark is proud to now be part of that legacy.
To earn the certification, we developed a dynamic plan focused on 17 interconnected goals, ranging from climate action and clean energy to cultural heritage and economic inclusion. It’s an ongoing process that requires continuous improvement and public accountability.

Sustainability In Action At Watermark
At Watermark, sustainability is woven into daily life. From our kitchens to our guestrooms to how we engage with the community, our efforts are guided by respect for the land, for our neighbours and for future generations.
Some of our key initiatives include:
- Low-flow water fixtures
- LED lighting upgrades
- On-site EV charging
- Recycling & waste reduction
- Local food & wine sourcing
- Eco-friendly guest amenities
- Carbon footprint tracking
- Community partnerships
Why This Matters
For our guests, the certification means you can enjoy your stay knowing it supports a lighter environmental footprint and contributes to a healthier region. Small details like refillable amenities, locally sourced food and EV chargers add up to a more thoughtful travel experience.
For our community, it shows our continued commitment to sustainable tourism that strengthens the local economy and protects what makes Osoyoos unique. It reflects our values as neighbours not just as a business.
You can explore more of our eco-journey in our eco-friendly focus blog or discover the broader Thompson Okanagan destination’s commitment.
Looking Ahead
We’re not stopping here. Certification is just the beginning. Our team will continue working on new initiatives, improving our impact and being transparent about our progress. We’re excited to keep collaborating with our guests and partners to lead responsibly in Osoyoos.
Thanks for being part of our sustainability journey.
