Winemakers in the Spotlight: LIBER FARM

Liber Farm and Winery

Although Liber Winery is a relative newcomer on the Similkameen scene, the organic farm that it is built upon is one of the oldest in BC. Taking full advantage of the superb terroir and long standing sustainable farming methods, Owners Mike and Nicole Dowell are building making a name for themselves in the Valley.

This beautiful 25 acre property along the banks of the Similkameen has been farmed organically since 1962 (when it was part of the Mariposa Farm). The Dowells continue to grow several varieties of apples, as well as 7 acres of established merlot and chardonnay grapes. The couple is passionate about the Similkameen lifestyle, and have jumped into farming life with both feet. With the help of consulting winemaker Pascal Madevon, they have begun to create flavourful wines from their estate-grown grapes. They are excited about well-deserved recognition that the Similkameen is starting to garner, and are proud to be a part of it all.

Owner/Winemaker: Mike Dowell

What path led you to a career as a winemaker? I decided to make my own path! Following it has been an adventure.

If you were a wine, which wine would you be? My wife says I am a Merlot, so…I guess that’s what I am.

If you could only drink one wine for the rest of your life, what wine would it be and why? What? There’s no way I could do that!

What is your greatest passion? My family. I am passionate about doing my best every day for them.

What’s your secret food craving? Black licorice. Yeah, I know. That’s why it’s a secret craving…

What’s your favourite food to eat while watching movies? Popcorn. Is there some other movie food? Surely, not!

What is your favourite grape, and why? I love the Muscat. It’s timeless. It’s a sweet, floral, and delicious varietal that’s been cultivated since Antiquity!

What drives you? It’s so important for me to know that I am creating a legacy, and leaving something wonderful behind for my children.

If you couldn’t do this, what would you do? Ha! I haven’t had a spare moment to think about it!

What is your favourite South-Okanagan/Similkameen activity? I love enjoying the outdoors with my family –there are so many things to do in this beautiful corner of the world.

Describe your dream meal: Scallops with wild mushroom risotto. Even just imagining it is mouth-watering.

What is your favourite food or wine film, and why? A Good Year, with Russel Crowe, of course. It is a very romanticized version of owning a winery…
