Hugging Tree Winery
Hugging Tree Winery takes its name from the entwined willows nestled in the heart of the 60 acre vineyard. The trees are a fitting symbol of the close-knit family that farms this land. When (now retired) RCMP officers, Walter and Christine Makepeace, purchased the organic orchard property in 2005, they had a dream to create a farm where their family could grow. Still organically producing crisp apples and juicy peaches on half the property, the Makepeace family has spent 13 years cultivating a lush vineyard from a 20 acre parcel.
Inspired by the excellent soil and the world-class wines being produced in the Similkameen, Walter and son Bradley began to focus their efforts on winemaking. Retiring from a professional snowboarding career, Bradley has come home to the Valley to pursue his passion for wine, and is now at the helm in the winery. His commitment to creating the best possible product begins in the vineyard, where he patiently waits to harvest the grapes at the pinnacle of their ripeness. The result is a portfolio of award-winning wines that ably coax the flavours from the unique Similkameen terroir.

If you were a wine, which wine would you be? Petit Verdot. It’s not for everyone, and sometimes best in small doses!
What is your greatest passion? Travelling via my motorcycle, and camping along the way.
What might people be surprised to learn about you? I once fronted a heavy-metal band.
What’s your secret food craving? Raw Scallops. So delicious!
What’s your favourite food to eat while watching movies? Steamed artichokes with homemade dip. Doesn’t everyone eat that at the movies?
What is your favourite grape, and why? Cabernet Sauvignon, especially in the southern Similkameen, where it can be fully ripened.
What is your favourite South-Okanagan/Similkameen activity? Definitely floating down the Similkameen River with good friends!
Describe your dream meal: Every year on our anniversary, my wife and I have a seafood feast with bubbles, and it’s always a dream.
What is your favourite food or wine film, and why? Well, it’s not really a film, but I do enjoy the documentary series Chef’s Table. It’s easy to find inspiration watching those chefs with their passion and devotion to their craft, and the way they express the terroir of their life and landscape.
