The final countdown is on for Devour! Okanagan The Food Film Fest and we want to give you a little peek into the lives and minds of some of the Similkameen Wineries Association members who will be pouring during the weekend of food, film, wine, and fun. This weekend-long event is a foodie’s dream, set among the backdrop of one of Canada’s top food and wine regions. Festival events include an East vs West Showdown featuring Chef Michael Howell and Chef Adair Scott; a 6 course, wine paired dinner, with dishes from some of BC’s top chefs, paired with Similkameen wines and short, food-themed films; a Mother’s Day Rosé Sunday Brunch; and a Slow Food Market of Taste.

Select tickets and rooms are still available for this special event, taking place from May 6-8 at Watermark Beach Resort!

Your Name: George Hanson

Your Winery: Seven Stones Winery

What path lead you to a career as a winemaker? I was visiting family in Australia. Their neighbor had a vineyard and winery. I got to know him and looked at the lifestyle and decided that was what I wanted to do when I retired from the telephone industry in Yukon. I started studying and made wine as an amateur and about 10 years later I had the opportunity to leave the company with a handsome package. I moved to Osoyoos and a few weeks later found my ground.

What is your favourite, unconventional wine pairing? Merlot and cracker jacks work well together. The sweetness of caramel and the fruit of merlot make a great mouth blend

If you were a wine, which wine would you be? Cabernet Sauvignon… I guess this is my pick because it can be very purposeful and soothing or feisty and have lots of depth.

What is your favourite food or wine-related film and why? My favorite wine film is Sideways… I love the humor in that movie and am intrigued by how it changed merlot drinkers into Pinot fans… lol! Although many merlot lovers have come back.

What is your greatest passion? Making wine is my greatest passion. I feel very fortunate to be living my dream where work seems somewhat like play.

What might people be surprised to learn about you? People might be surprised to know that I enjoy sailing and whitewater canoeing. I love being on the water and absorbing the quiet.
