The desert does not typically come to mind when planning a dinner out. But as the sun drops behind the hills and the Osoyoos desert cools to a warm hush, Romancing the Desert makes a compelling case that it should.
Canada’s only desert is the setting for one of the South Okanagan’s most distinctive annual events, and the 2026 edition of Romancing the Desert returns on August 22 at the Osoyoos Desert Centre, promising an evening that moves between exquisite food, local wine and a landscape most Canadians never get to experience up close.
What Is Romancing The Desert?
Romancing the Desert is an annual fundraising gala presented by the Osoyoos Desert Centre, held each August at the Desert Centre grounds at 14580 146th Ave in Osoyoos. The evening runs from 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM, beginning in the last warm light of a late-summer afternoon and carrying through well into the night.
The format is part dinner, part guided tour and part celebration. Guests begin with a sumptuous outdoor dinner crafted by Chef Paul Cecconi of Brodo Kitchen, before moving onto the Desert Centre’s 1.5 km boardwalk for a guided tasting tour. Each station along the route pairs canapés and bites with wines, spirits and beverages from local producers. A silent auction runs through the evening, with packages ranging from gourmet dining experiences to outdoor adventures.

Canada’s Only Desert: The Story Behind The Gala
Proceeds from Romancing the Desert support the Osoyoos Desert Society’s ongoing work to protect and restore one of Canada’s most fragile ecosystems. The Osoyoos pocket desert is the northern tip of the Great Basin Desert, home to antelope-brush habitat and species found almost nowhere else in the country. The Desert Centre’s 67-acre nature interpretive facility is where conservation, education and public access meet.
When you buy a ticket to Romancing the Desert, you are funding the kind of environmental stewardship that keeps this landscape intact for future visitors, and for future evenings exactly like this one.
The Boardwalk Experience: What To Expect
The 1.5 km boardwalk tour is where the evening takes on its particular character. Guided by Desert Centre naturalists, guests move through the habitat as it transitions from dusk to dark, a shift that brings out a different side of the landscape entirely. The cooling air, the sounds of nocturnal wildlife and the moonlight over the sage give the walk a quality that is difficult to replicate anywhere else in Canada.
At each station along the boardwalk, this year’s contributors serve canapés alongside their pours:
- Over the Fence Winery
- 15 Park
- Maple Leaf Spirits
- Kaleidoscope Fruit Ranch
- Moon Curser Winery
- Rashmi’s Rasoi
A note on what to wear: smart casual works well. The desert cools after sunset, so bring a light layer. Comfortable shoes are recommended for the boardwalk.
Watermark & 15 Park’s Involvement
Watermark Beach Resort is proud to be a sponsor of Romancing the Desert 2026, supporting an event that reflects what makes Osoyoos worth the trip.
On the boardwalk itself, 15 Park is bringing one of the evening’s tasting stations to life. The 15 Park culinary team leads the station, cooking and serving guests in the desert as part of the guided tour circuit. It is the kind of moment that does not happen in a restaurant: a live culinary station set against Canada’s most unique natural landscape, for guests who are already having a night unlike any other.
Watermark is also running a giveaway connected to the event.
Late Summer In The South Okanagan
August is when the South Okanagan reaches its full expression. The days are long and warm, harvest is beginning and the evenings carry that particular quality: still light past 8:00 PM, with the lake holding the last of the day’s colour.
The desert in late summer is alive in ways it is not at any other time of year. The antelope-brush is in full growth, wildlife is active after dark and the landscape that can feel austere in spring takes on a richness that rewards a closer look. Romancing the Desert is timed deliberately. This is the evening at its best, but if you need more ideas, here is everything Osoyoos has to offer after dark.
Make A Night Of It: Stay At Watermark
The Osoyoos Desert Centre is a short drive from Watermark Beach Resort, making it easy to turn Romancing the Desert into a proper getaway rather than a day trip.
Arrive Saturday, check in to a lakeside suite and spend the afternoon on the beach or the pool deck before heading out to the Desert Centre. When the boardwalk winds down and the stars are out, you are close to home. Sunday morning, the lake is yours.
