Stick a pin in a map somewhere between the California hills, Motor City and Nashville, and there you’ll find TrailerHawk. Blasting out haunted melodies, country-soaked Americana and jagged rock n’ roll, this northern band digs at the roots of a rich, southern sound.
And the roots go deep. Long-time fans of the Canadian music scene may recognize the branches on the band’s family tree: Trailerhawk boasts members of legendary Canadian groups Matthew Good, Sons of Freedom, Grapes of Wrath, Ginger and Sunday Morning. You’ll find Don Binns on bass fiddle, Don Short on drums, Lanny Hussey on pedal steel, vocals, and guitars, Rod Bruno on lead and rhythm guitars, while the incomparable Carmen Bruno sings her tales of life, liquor, laments and love on the run.
But if you don’t recognize those names, not to worry. You will recognize these: famed guitar legend and producer Colin Linden (The Band, Bob Dylan, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, T-Bone Burnette Robert Plant) produced TrailerHawk’s debut EP, Half Up Front. Charles Esten, star of the Nashville TV show and acclaimed musician lends his booming voice to “Church of Jim Beam”, a swampy gospel-blues track straight out of Tom Waits’ basement. Kevin McKendree (Brian Setzer, Tinsley Ellis, Delbert McClinton) pitched in on organ and piano on “Shy” and “Thing About You”. Canadian Gary Craig (Big Dave McLean, Bruce Cockburn, Tom Cochrane) added percussion on “Church of Jim Beam, Shy and Car” while five-time, Grammy Award-winning Ray Kennedy (Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson) mastered the EP.
So you can clearly see why Half Up Front jumped to #36 on iTunes Canada’s country chart in less than 24 hours of its global release, and why you’re going to want to give it a spin.
