Making Their (Water)Mark:
Paul Scanlon, Hotel Manager
This month we’re chatting with Paul Scanlon, our Hotel Manager. Paul oversees all operating departments at the Resort and reports directly to the Ownership group. Paul has also been a member of the Strata Council at the Resort since opening and acts as the suite owners’ liaison.
Thanks for talking with us, Paul. Where are you from, and what brought you to Osoyoos?
Thanks for having me! I grew up up in the Lower Mainland of Vancouver and after living/working in Whistler for 12 years, the role of Hotel Manager came available for Watermark and I jumped at the chance to experience something new and move to the Okanagan.
As the Hotel Manager, what’s a typical day like for you?
Busy! I oversee all operating departments at the Resort and report directly to the Ownership group. All departments including Guest Services, Housekeeping, Maintenance, Food & Beverage, Marketing and Accounting fall under my scope of responsibility. I enjoy the diversity of tasks and the fun I get to have doing them. My work day is a wonderful mixture of guest interaction, forecasting and planning, analysis data and trends and making lots and lots of decisions that affect the team and the guests overall experience!
What path led you to your success at Watermark?
I have been working in the hotel industry since 1991 and after spending six years at a Delta Hotel in Richmond, I decided to join Pan Pacific as they were about to open a new hotel in Whistler in 1997. After a very successful opening and subsequent number of years a second Pan Pacific was being built in Whistler which opened in 2005. After 10 wonderful years with Pan Pacific I decided it was time for a change and joined the opening team for a new boutique hotel in Whistler called the Nita Lake Lodge. After 2 years and a growing family, we made the move to Osoyoos to pursue an opportunity at Watermark in 2009 and it has been amazing ever since!
Is there someone at work you feel deserves a shout out and why?
In this industry there are show horses and work horses. Both are equally important to creating the magic but the show horses tend to get all the praise and recognition. I feel the people that deserve the shout out the most are the ones that work more behind the scenes (as much as I do dislike this term)… the housekeepers, the maintenance team, the cooks in the kitchen. They may not interact with our guests and owners to the extent other roles do… but without them and the hard work they do, the place would literally fall apart.
What are some of your hobbies?
Outside of raising the kids … it is clearly fitness. Where I once actually wanted to be one of those Strongman you see on TV (I actually used to lift logs, push cars and throw full kegs around my acreage in Pemberton.) Now I’m more of a cross between a weightlifter, crossfitter and cardio guy when I workout. I also love to go for walks and hikes up in the mountains.
So you have kids? What are their favourite activities?
I do. I have 3 boys … all with names after movie characters. Hudson, (16) is named after Bill Paxton’s character in the movie Aliens. Hayden, (14) whose full name is Hayden James Tiberius, named after Capt James T. Kirk from Star Trek. And finally Holden, (9) whose full name is Holden Wade Garrett, after Sam Elliot’s character in the movie Road House.
All three boys are active in soccer, basketball and the two older ones play volleyball. Like all kids in this generation, they play way too much on their Xbox!
How about something about you! What personal goal(s) do you have?
I am on a quest for peace and happiness. Work brings me so much joy and happiness that I have been trying to create that balance in my personal life. As I get older my priorities outside of work have changed. I want to be healthy and live a long life for my kids.
I have worked very hard on myself both physically and mentally. I have made a lot of changes in habits to foster and create this environment for me and have set myself up for success as best as I can.
We’re proud of our staff and excited at the opportunity to share more about them. If you’ve had a great experience with a team member, we’d love to hear about it! Nominate a staff member for our profile series and learn more about what makes them a special and valued member of the Watermark family.
